Augustus Kagyene
Founder & Director, Curtin Child Learning Centre (CLICCs) · Sembabule District, Uganda
Educated by his own community, he walked fifteen kilometres a day to school. Then he built one in his village.
Augustus Kagyene is a community leader and education advocate and the founder of CLICCS, a nursery and primary school in Sembabule District, Uganda, serving children from underserved communities.
His own education was community-funded through university, with neighbours contributing his fees in small amounts, and roughly fifteen kilometres walked daily because there were so few schools near him.
He returned in 2017 and started the school he had once needed, widening early childhood provision and pairing academics with practical skills.
He has led work to bring solar power into CLICCS to cut running costs, describing power as the quiet foundation of a good school day.
He serves as Director and describes the school as the community's, not his own.

In his own words
My journey has not been a rosy one, but it has been carried by kind-hearted people here and abroad.
We raise a child at CLICCS.
